Project managers are responsible for the planning and implementation of island restoration projects, in line with Island Conservation's mission. They ensure internal project coordination and work closely with partners, stakeholders, and IC staff to achieve set objectives. Effective project management at IC requires:

  • technical skills in project management (eg, budgeting, fundraising, planning, scope definition and management, risk management, contract and cooperation agreement management, and decision-making)
  • expertise in eradication (eg, practical knowledge of eradication principles and tools used, knowledge of local regulations and compliance)
  • leadership skills (eg, interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, problem-solving, team building and leadership).

 

Essential qualities

Project managers are involved at every stage of a project's lifecycle. For the projects entrusted to them, they ensure that the work is carried out correctly and in the right way. They generally manage all or part of the project lifecycle, but must also be able to provide support to other managers, both internal and external, when needed.

This position requires frequent travel, often to remote areas where external communications are limited.

 

Responsibilities:

Planning, managing and implementing projects (60%)

• Define the scope of the project and assess its feasibility.

• Estimate the cost of the project and collaborate with IC colleagues and project partners to identify, solicit and obtain funding, and report on it.

• Oversee the planning and implementation of the project.

• Implement the measures necessary to create and maintain conditions favorable to the success of the project.

• Promote gender equality, inclusion of disabled persons and social inclusion in all decisions and interactions with colleagues, local communities and stakeholders.

• Ensure that the project scope is aligned with the island's restoration objectives and Island Conservation's strategic vision.

• Collaborate with IC staff and partners to identify and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements necessary for the smooth running of the project.

• Develop project budgets, manage expenses and monitor budget execution.

• Proactively identify and communicate critical project-related issues and risks, and ensure they are managed in collaboration with the Operations Manager and IC management.

• Collect and analyze data gathered in the field, then write reports and summaries. 

• Reports on the progress of deliverables, financial and non-financial indicators, risks and issues, internally and to partners and donors, in accordance with requirements.

• Manages the procurement and contracting processes for projects, in accordance with IC policies and donor requirements.

• Directs and supports the planning and implementation of fieldwork, including reconnaissance missions, field studies and the implementation of eradication activities.

• Complies with all IC policies relating to travel, financial authorizations, purchasing, contracting, etc.

Supervision (20%)

• Lead teams composed of IC staff and its partners, contractors and volunteers.

• Identify, establish and maintain relationships with partners, stakeholders and communities essential to the success of projects and the fulfillment of IC's mission.

• Demonstrate a commitment to safe work practices and ensure their implementation.

• To embody the principles of gender equality, inclusion of disabled persons and social inclusion in all decisions and interactions with colleagues, local communities and stakeholders.

• Solicit and provide constructive feedback to improve work efficiency.

• May be required to directly supervise staff.

 

Strategic development and innovation (5%)

• Contribute to the development of the regional and organizational strategy

• Analyze the external work environment to identify information, trends, best practices, and innovations

• Proposes new ideas and opportunities for discussion

  • Write reports, scientific and popular science articles, and create presentations based on project activities, research data, and monitoring.

 

Organizational integration 5%

• Coordination with ICEAT (project monitoring and advisory committee) to guarantee project quality

• Collaboration with the Partnerships team to mobilize partners

• Collaboration with Island Conservation's Innovation and Impact programs to ensure that project scope is defined in accordance with Island Conservation's strategic vision

• Collaboration with the Partnerships and Communications teams at Island Conservation to optimize opportunities for Island Conservation’s mission

• Collaboration with the Communications team to increase the visibility of Island Conservation

• Collaboration with other Island Conservation staff members to share lessons learned from successes and failures

 

Learning and development (5%)

• Develop skills and abilities through stimulating assignments, training, and peer learning

• Complete mandatory training courses as defined by the organization and project needs

• Contribute to the development of colleagues, direct collaborators and partners by offering training, sharing information on projects, etc.

• Define and report on objectives in accordance with organizational processes

 

Administrative (5%)

• Perform the tasks necessary for the smooth operation of Island Conservation, including the timely submission of expense reports and timesheets

 

Additional responsibilities:

Approximately 10% of tasks and responsibilities can be adapted to reflect the evolving needs of the line manager and the organization. This may include performing tasks not initially planned or additional to those described in the job description. This flexibility is essential to allow for an adaptive response to changing priorities and objectives.

Profil recherché :

Qualifications

Essentials

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in conservation biology, environmental science, natural resource management or similar field; equivalent professional experience will be taken into account.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in managing conservation or environmental projects, from defining the scope and planning to implementation and reporting.
  • Proven experience in budget preparation, financial monitoring and production of reports for donors or financial partners.
  • Practical knowledge of the principles, tools and methods of eradicating invasive species, including relevant regulatory and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience in identifying, applying for and managing project funding, including grants and cooperation agreements.
  • Availability and ability to travel frequently to remote areas, including fieldwork in Pacific islands where communication infrastructure is limited.
  • Proficiency in French and English (written and spoken).

Recommended 

  • Work experience in the Pacific region and knowledge of Pacific cultures, customary protocols, and community engagement.
  • Experience of monitoring, evaluation and learning frameworks
  • Publication or contribution to scientific or popular articles on conservation
  • Proven experience in risk management and adaptive project management in complex operational environments

Skills & Character Traits

  • Proven ability to lead and coordinate diverse teams (staff, service providers, partners and local community volunteers) across diverse sites.
  • Strong skills in stakeholder engagement and developing relationships with the public, private and local community sectors.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, particularly in the area of ​​writing technical reports and presentations.
  • Commitment to the principles of gender equality, inclusion of disabled persons and social integration (GEI) and their concrete application in project design and team leadership.

Flexibility & mobility

  • Availability for extended travel (16 to 24 weeks per year) to Pacific countries.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and organizational needs.
  • The candidate must be able to adapt their working hours in order to collaborate continuously with staff located in different Pacific time zones.
